Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society Announces New President, Board of Directors 

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, a local non-profit that provides outreach to families touched by Down Syndrome, has announced its newly elected Board of Directors. On Saturday, January 23^rd, John Bogardus passed down his title as President to Brian Hussey, former Vice President of the organization. Hussey served as Vice President since the society’s formation in 2006 and is one of the original members of the Board of Directors.  

“I am very honored and excited to be the newly elected President of LDSS,” said Hussey. “Through John Bogardus’ leadership before me, we have grown into a thriving organization that provides real value to our members and our community. I can only hope to continue that level of leadership to promote the mission of support, outreach, education and advocacy for people with Down Syndrome.”  

Current members interview and subsequently nominate each person to serve on the Board of Directors. Non-nominating members then cast their vote at the following meeting. The leadership positions appointed at Saturday’s meeting include Brooke May as Vice President, Joe Marchese as Treasurer, and Candy Bogardus as Secretary. Kevin Sheehan, Wendy Fears, Kristen Nyce, and Dr. Ben Spitalnick were all elected to serve as members of the board. 

Former President, John Bogardus, will remain on the Board of Directors as the Immediate Past President. As a leading force behind the support group, he has organized the group’s annual Buddy Walk in Forsyth Park for the past four years. His hard work and determination have increased community participation in the event each successive year.

Established in 2006, the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) is a non-profit family support group designed to benefit people with Down syndrome and their families.  The LDSS is an affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), a national advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society now provides outreach to families in eight local counties. Families are encouraged to bring their children with them to meetings, which are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month.  These gatherings usually include a guest speaker as well as social time for families to meet and share with one another.  For more information call John or
