MEDIA ADVISORY: Butterfly Story Time at the Savannah Mall

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

MEDIA ADVISORY: Butterfly Story Time at the Savannah Mall

WHO: Live Oak Public Libraries
WHAT: A librarian will be hosting a children’s Story Time, where two butterfly themed books will be read: Glasswings: A Butterfly’s Story, by Elisa Kleven & The Butterfly Tree, by Sandra Markle
WHEN: Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 1 p.m.
WHERE: Center Court of the Savannah Mall
NOTES: After the storytime, we will examine how Glasswing Butterflies take on the color of their surroundings and we will recreate a migration of Monarch Butterflies. Music and singing will also be part of the activities.
RSVP: N/A

Glasswing Facts:
Although Claire (in the story) is a make-believe butterfly, Glasswings exist in real life. They are very hard to spot and are almost invisible, because they lack the colored scales which give other butterflies their brilliant hues and patterns.
Various species can be found in Central and South America, where they are affectionately called Espejitos or “Little Mirrors.” Although Glasswings look fragile, their wings are strong and they are able to migrate long distances.

Monarch Facts:
Monarchs do not fly in flocks like birds do. Each butterfly flies alone, but travels the same route as lots of other monarchs. There may be thousands flying at the same time. When the butterflies land to rest or eat, this can be an amazing sight. Monarchs can migrate as far as 2,000 miles.
In the story Butterfly Tree a young girl is frightened by what looks like an orange cloud. What will she find when she goes searching?

Chatham County Master Gardener to Speak about Butterflies and Butterfly Gardens at Savannah Mall

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

(SAVANNAH, GA) Howard Turner, a Chatham County Master Gardener and Master Naturalist from The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension – Chatham County service, will be at the Savannah Mall Saturday, July 12 to discuss butterflies and butterfly gardens. The Savannah Mall will also host a butterfly release that day at noon.

Turner will present information on native plants and host plants for butterflies and caterpillars. He will also provide UGA Cooperative Extension publications and will bring plants to display and discuss with visitors in the Center Court area. He will present the talk between noon and 2:00 p.m. following the butterfly release.

“People generally know that butterflies get nectar from every flower they see, but the plant that butterflies lay their eggs are vital to their survival. If caterpillars don’t have a host plant, they will not be able to eat,” said Turner.

Turner has owned and operated a nursery, Ann and Howard’s Plants, for nine years with his wife. His grand children, 8-year-old Micah and 10-year-old Skylynn, will be with him during the presentation to help teach other children.

The Savannah Mall Butterfly Exhibit was opened Friday, July 4 and will run until July 27. The exhibit features over 200 live butterflies from a variety of species tucked away inside a beautiful conservatory, decorated and complete with plants conducive to butterfly flight. The program also features educational displays, butterfly crafts and life-cycle kiosks. Admission is $3 per person. With one paid adult admission, one child under 8 years old will receive free admission.
