Enmarket Donates $5,000 to Savannah Area Nonprofit Organizations Through 2016 Encourage Health Series

(SAVANNAH, GA) During its 2016 Encourage Health Educational Series, enmarket has donated $5,000 to four area nonprofit organizations: The Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America, Savannah AMBUCS, Savannah Tree Foundation and Urban Hope, Inc.

In conjunction with Healthy Savannah and other sponsors, the fuel and convenience store chain presented $1,000 grants during each lecture.

“We are committed to helping Savannah become a healthier community, and the Encourage Health Series is specifically geared to help show all of us how live healthier lives,” said Matt Clements, enmarket’s director of marketing. ”This is a win-win for all of us – those nonprofit organizations receiving the grant money and the audience members who enjoy learning about new ways to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

The company was founded in 1963 as Interstate Stations, then rebranded as “Enmark” in 1983 and most recently as “enmarket” in 2015 to reflect fresh and healthy food options.

To further its commitment to helping people live healthier lives, enmarket established the Encourage Health Series and in conjunction with other local sponsors, has presented a series of four lectures throughout the year for the past three years, calling on respected experts to share insights on nutrition, fitness and general tips for healthy living.

The 2016 program was co-sponsored by Gulfstream, Sandfly Family Dental, Healthy Savannah, Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and GPB Savannah – WSVH 91.1/WWIO 89.9.

In April, The Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America was selected to be awarded the first of the 2016 series’ $1,000 grants. This nonprofit organization combines educational activities with value-driven projects in order to mold young men and encourage them to make ethical and moral decisions throughout their future. The event featured a presentation by Kevin Klinkenberg, “Going Old School: Walk Your Way to Better Health,” encouraging attendees to make walking a part of their everyday lives.

In June, a $1,000 grant was presented to Urban Hope, which helps inner city children create better lives for themselves. Ellen Blossman’s presentation, “Eat Well and Boost Your Energy With Phytochemicals,” addressed the role of chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants and help prevent cancer and their relation to overall health.

At the third event in August, the $1,000 Encourage Health grant went to the Savannah Tree Foundation, a 33-year-old nonprofit organization that works to protect trees in Savannah and Chatham County. The lecture featured Denise Grabowski presenting “10 Ways Buildings Affect Your Mission to Healthy Life.” Grabowski said most people spend time indoors and explained how buildings can affect overall physical, mental and social wellbeing.

In October, the final lecture in the series benefitted the Savannah AMBUCS with a $1,000 grant and featured a presentation by Bauer Coslick: “10 Ways to Reduce Inflammation in the Body to Improve Longevity Through Acupuncture Practices.” Coslick is the owner of Vitality: Acupuncture +Integrative medicine. AMBUCS is an organization dedicated to bringing mobility and independence to people with disabilities, primarily through donating their Amtryke therapeutic tricycles to those in need.

AMBUCS also received a $1,000 grand prize for collecting the greatest number of votes from fans of the four nonprofits. At the beginning of the series, each organization received a QR code to be scanned at any of the 61 area enmarket stores. No purchases were necessary, but supporters had to go into a store to vote.

All of the 2016 enmarket Encourage Health Education Series lunchtime programs were held at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium, 1375 Chatham Parkway. Information about the 2017 program, including speakers, recipients and lecture dates, will be announced in early 2017.

Low Country Dermatology Presents Donations to the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empire

(SAVANNAH, GA) For the third consecutive year, Low Country Dermatology held a holiday donation drive to collect needed supplies for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Coastal Empire and to help stock a “holiday store” for RMHC families. The donations were presented to Bill Sorochak, executive director of RMHC.

“The stress of having a child in the hospital is often overwhelming, and having to think about buying holiday gifts has to be the farthest thing from a parent’s mind,” said Dr. Corinne Howington, who owns Low Country Dermatology. “I’m so thankful for my patients, community and staff who brought so many items into our office. It really makes a difference.”

Items donated to the holiday store allow parents who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House to pick out presents for their children and other family members.

Collected items included: stuffed animals, bath toys, teething toys, board books and interactive toys (blocks, rattles), nerf and Fisher Price toys, board games, toy trucks, dolls and dress-up clothes, adult coloring books and colored pencils, books, snacks, high efficiency free and clear laundry detergent and dryer sheets, hand sanitizer and hand soap, disposable bowls, plates utensils and gloves, trash bags, sponges and liquid dish soap, tissues, and disinfectant wipes.

“We are dedicated to providing a ‘home away from home’ for seriously ill or injured children and their families who are receiving treatment at area hospitals,” said Sorochak. “Every donation helps ensure we can stretch the dollars that support our 13-bedroom house in Savannah to better serve the families who depend on us. We are so grateful she has stepped up year after year to help them.”

The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities is to create, find and support programs that enhance the health and well-being of children and families. The house operates on a waiting list most of the year. For more information, visit http://www.rmhccoastalempire.org/about-our-house.html

Russo’s Seafoods Celebrates 70 Years in Business

By | Local NewsWIRE

Russo’s Seafoods Celebrates 70 Years in Business

(SAVANNAH, GA) The year was 1946. The United Nations General Assembly held its first meeting in London. In The U.S., the Atomic Energy Commission was established, and in Savannah, Charles J. Russo Sr. opened a seafood business with his wife Antoinette. Now, seventy years later, Russo’s Seafoods of Savannah is still known as one of the finest distributors of wholesale/retail Georgia white shrimp, blue crab, fish and fresh quality seafood in the southeast.

The founder of Russo’s Seafoods, Charles J. Russo, Sr., was introduced to the seafood business by Louis Rayola. Having just graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1931, Russo Sr. was offered a job by Rayola after a chance meeting at the Post Office where Russo, Sr. had just applied for a position. While working at Rayola’s fish market, Russo, Sr. also worked part time at the Post Office until he was sent overseas as a chief petty officer during the war.

After returning from the war, Charles J. Russo, Sr. and his wife, Antoinette Russo, opened up Russo’s Seafoods when Antoinette’s mother lent them the money to get started. The oldest son, Russo, Jr. joined the family business after graduating from Benedictine Military School in 1961 and briefly working on a Salmon boat in Ketchikan, Alaska. Eight years later, this family business had grown so much, they relocated the market from its original location at the corner of Waters Ave and 31st Ln into a larger facility, located at the corner of Abercorn and 40th St where it remains today.

Since opening 70 years ago, Russo’s Seafoods has epitomized its motto, “There is a Difference,” by offering the highest quality of seafood, prepared in the cleanest and most sanitary surroundings in the southeast. Local customers enjoy a showcase of freshly prepared shrimp, scallops, oysters, crabmeat, and assorted fish, cut to order. The business also carries a full line of frozen seafood and ships overnight to customers nationwide.

The Russo’s Seafoods Restaurant, which opened in 2006, is located next door to the business, in an old home the family restored and decorated in a nautical style. There, guests feel more like family than patrons and are surrounded by fishnets, ships’ wheels and Russo family pictures, most prominently highlighting founders Charles Jr. and his fishing and shrimping pals. Lunch is served daily Tuesday through Saturday with mouth-watering dishes that feature fresh crab, famous family recipe crab stew, shrimp and any fish can be made to order with advance notice.

“The fact that our business has survived for 70 years is a testament to the loyalty of my customers,” said Russo Jr. “We owe our success to them and the beautiful coastal waterways we live on. Savannah is truly a one-of-a-kind place.”

The public is invited to stop by the restaurant, located at 209 E 40th St, Savannah, GA 31401, to share a story or a sign a beautiful coastal print which will be hung in the store to commemorate the past 70 years.
