Envisioning a Healthier Life for The Savannah Faith Community

Meet and Greet planned for February 13 at Kingdom Life Church

(SAVANNAH, GA) Healthy Savannah’s Faith and Health Coalition has announced it will host a Meet and Greet at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 13 for those interested in contributing to a positive change in Savannah’s faith community’s health and future. The event will be held at Kingdom Life Church at 425 W. Montgomery Cross Road in Savannah.

“Our goal is to meet everyone who wishes to see and contribute to a positive change in our community,” said Rhonda Barlow, MPH, RDN, LD, CLC, Barlow works as a school nutrition coordinator with Savannah Chatham Public Schools and has volunteered with Healthy Savannah since 2007. She also serves as the chair of the Healthy Savannah Faith and Healthy Coalition.

“Please join us to reconnect and reenergize our community’s Faith and Health Coalition. There will be hors d’oeuvres, a small gift, lots of useful updates on the Coalition and our collaboration with the COVID supplemental grant, and what direction we should take this year.”

The event is presented by Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Ga. through funding from a supplemental grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Food and beverages will be provided by event partners The Southern Palate and Ashford Tea Company.

“Our faith partners have been some of our strongest advocates over the past year as we offered Listening Sessions to hear from members of the community about their experiences in health advocacy, especially as it pertains to fostering COVID and flu vaccine awareness throughout the Savannah area,” said Dr. Elsie Smalls, operations manager. “Members of the faith community have participated in our Community Health Advocate Training sessions and partnered with us in providing awareness events across the community.”

The Community Health Advocate program is intended to broaden the initiatives of the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant by increasing vaccine awareness, access and acceptance in communities at high risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19 or flu.

Those who are interested in discussing their faith community’s health and future are invited to RSVP for the Meet and Greet event at http://evite.me/Ae1gDD8vvH

ABOUT THE YMCA OF COASTAL GEORGIA/HEALTHY SAVANNAH GRANT FOR RACIAL AND ETHNIC APPROACHES TO COMMUNITY HEALTH: In September 2018, Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia were awarded a five-year, $3.4 million grant called Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health. Awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the funding is being deployed in an “upstream” approach by the Savannah/Chatham County project team to foster sustainable health equity among Black residents in low-wealth neighborhoods. The aim of the local project, called Healthy Opportunities Powering Equity, or HOPE, is to increase the availability of high-quality nutrition; promote physical activity through creating greater access to safe places to walk, run, bike and play; and foster stronger connections between people and the healthcare providers who serve them. Working with more than 200 community partners and organizations, the team is committed to elevating the health and wellness of the community through policy, systems, and environmental change. In July 2022, Healthy Savannah received the CDC’s 2022 REACH Lark Galloway-Gilliam Award for Advancing Health Equity Challenge. The award recognizes extraordinary individuals and entities whose work has contributed to advancing health equity.
