Stratton Leopold, co-owner of Leopold’s Ice Cream and a motion picture producer, is scheduled to be the next guest speaker for Magnolia Manor on the Coast’s Renaissance Lecture Series on August 14th at 5:30 pm.

Stratton will speak about the past, present and future of Leopold’s Ice Cream.  Little known facts about the shop will be disclosed at the presentation, like how the ice cream is shipped across the country to Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles.

Stratton and his wife can often be found doling out ice cream scoops at the famous ice cream shop in downtown Savannah as well as in Hollywood or on location around the world producing major motion pictures like Mission Impossible III, Paycheck and The Sum of All Fears (to name a few),.  Since re-opening Leopold’s Ice Cream in 2004, he has continued to produce motion pictures and is currently filming a movie called Red Soil.  Leopold’s Ice Cream will be celebrating its fourth birthday on Broughton Street this August.  Stay tuned for details!

The history of Leopold’s Ice Cream goes back nearly a century.  In 1919, Peter Leopold, along with his brothers George and Basil, founded Leopold’s Ice Cream at the corner of Gwinnett and Habersham Streets in Savannah.  Peter had been taught the art of making homemade super-premium ice cream and developed proprietary recipes for this delicious treat.  Many lasting memories were made at Leopold’s between 1920 and 1970 since it was "THE" gathering place for all of Savannah, including famed lyricist Johnny Mercer, who grew up a block away.  There were many favorite flavors.  The signature flavor, Tutti-Frutti was (and still is) often shipped all over the United States.  After George and Peter passed away, Stratton (son of Peter) ran the Gwinnett Street store and his uncle Basil ran the store at the Medical Arts Shopping Center.

Leopold’s Ice Cream is located at 212 East Broughton Street in Savannah.  It was designed by Academy Award nominated designer Dan Lomino, who used many of the fixtures from the original store.  There are movie props, posters, and signed photographs of actors Dan and Stratton have worked with over the years.  Much of the décor is original including the original soda fountain, soda fountain cover, back bar, sundae holders, banana split boats, malted milk dispenser, etc., which are still used today.  Even the old Philco radio and the wooden, interior phone booth from the old store are on display.
