(Richmond Hill, GA) It might be the winter season, but gelato is more popular than ever! Joel Caplan, owner of “Café Gelatohhh” in Savannah will be the guest speaker for the Renaissance Lecture Series held by Magnolia Manor on the Coast. The event is slated for April 10th at 5:30pm.

Gelato as a product is very different from ice cream. It contains less milk fat, is served at a slightly higher temperature and contains much less overrun (air) than normal ice cream. Caplan’s water-based sorbetto fruit flavors contain no fat and no milk, and are made with fruit, water, and sugar only. This makes them perfectly accessible to vegans or those who are lactose-intolerant.

Because gelato contains approximately 15% air, as compared to 50% for commercial ice cream, the product is denser, creamier, and much heavier than a comparable volume of ice cream. One cup of gelato will weigh nearly three times as much as one cup of ice cream. The end result is a product that tastes decadent and rich but actually has about 150-180 calories per serving and only 4-6 grams of fat, depending upon the flavor (or zero grams of fat in the sorbetto).

Each month, Magnolia Manor hosts the Renaissance Lecture Series at its Richmond Hill campus. The event begins at 5:30 and includes a light supper. After the guest concludes his/her speech, a question and answer session follows. The event is free and open to the public, but guests are asked to RSVP by calling Julie Gartside at (912) 756-4300.
