Savannah Agencies Host Event to End Homelessness in Savannah

(SAVANNAH, GA) Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless and other local agencies will host the Ninth Annual Stand Down for Homelessness.

This year’s event will encompass two days, September 25 and 26 in order to provide a resource fair from 8 AM to 2 PM and a job fair daily from 9 AM to 2 PM. These events are open to all at the Savannah Civic Center, located at 301 West Oglethorpe. This two day event will serve as a one-stop shop of resources for the homeless as well as others in need within our community. People in need will be able to speak face-to-face with more than 50 vendors gathered to discuss information about jobs, veterans’ services, housing, and social programs.

On Tuesday, September 25, area homeless will be able to meet directly with local and state agencies about jobs, housing and healthcare. Other services include resume writing tips, substance abuse treatment and access to Social Security and  Veteran’s Administration services. Attendees can expect to receive personal attention from housing providers and case managers. Additionally, attendees will be able to receive services like flu shots, haircuts and teeth cleaning.

Previous years of success indicate that these events are a great way to directly connect homeless citizens with the resources they desperately need to help them get back on their feet. According to Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless, last year 5541 individuals experienced homelessness in Chatham County.

The annual Stand Down event is funded in part by Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc. Operation Open Doors, US Department of Labor – Veterans Employment and Training Services, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, The Salvation Army, the American Legion and the Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless.

On Wednesday, September 26, Congressman Jack Kingston will serve as an honorary co-host along with the collaborative partners for the job fair at the Savannah Civic Center. This is a great opportunity to find employment and for local businesses to locate dependable potential employees that are ready to work and qualified to do the job.
