(SAVANNAH, GA) Kennickell Print and Communications Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and (SFI)

Kennickell Print and Communications has become the first sheet-fed commercial printer in Georgia and South Carolina to attain both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certifications.  These certifications state that Kennickell prints on paper which has been certified “environmentally friendly” from the forest to the end user.  Kennickell met the audit requirements ensuring compliance to these two internationally recognized standards.

These standards require an organization to have documented procedures and training for maintaining the chain of custody and ensuring that certified paper cannot be mixed or confused with uncertified materials. Each step in the paper manufacturing and printing processes (forest – logs – paper mill – paper fiber – distributor – printer) must be certified to allow the use of the FSC or SFI logo on the printed product. Most Fortune 500 or environmentally conscious companies now require either the FSC or SFI logo to be printed on their products.

“People talk about the need to be environmentally conscious but don’t always follow that up with actions”, stated Al Kennickell, president of Kennickell Print and Communications.  “Due to the fact that we handle so much paper we felt the need to insure we were doing everything in our power to preserve our natural resources”. “We also understand how important environmental responsibility is to our clients, so now we give them an opportunity to do their part by using paper from renewable forests.  They can also demonstrate their support of the environment to their clients by printing the FSC and SFI logos on their printed products”.

Kennickell is also the largest paper recycler in Savannah and one of the largest in the southeast, recycling an average of 40 tons of paper per month.  As the largest recycler Kennickell saves on average per month:

*148,000 pounds of lumber
* 280,000 gallons of water
* 132 cubic yards of landfill space
* 720 Trees
* 120 barrels of oil

Kennickell also recycles nearly 2000 pounds of aluminum monthly.

Founded in 1892, Kennickell is one of the most progressive commercial printing, direct mail and fulfillment operations in the country.  The company employees more than 100 people in its two facilities, and has over 130.000 square feet under roof.  Kennickell has always been an innovator, becoming the first printer in North America to achieve the ISO 9000 international quality certification in the mid 1990’s.
