Professional tennis is coming to Savannah as The Landings Club at Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, prepares to host the Tail 2009 USTA $50,000 Savannah Challenger, May 2-10, 2009. Tail Activewear, a leading brand in women’s golf and tennis apparel, is the title sponsor of the event, while the Greater Savannah Sports Council is the tournament’s presenting sponsor.

"Sponsoring the Tail 2009 USTA $50,000 Savannah Challenger gives Tail a great opportunity to participate with The Landings Club in bringing professional tennis to Savannah," says Tail CEO Jerry Edwards. "Tail is excited to be involved with the Savannah tennis community and appreciates all the support it has received from the Savannah Tennis League, coaches and players."

The tournament, which will take place on the clay courts of the Franklin Creek Tennis Center, will feature world-ranked tennis professionals vying to win highly coveted ATP ranking points in addition to prize money. Andre Agassi and Jim Courier are among past participants that typify the level of competition in the Challenger Series. For many of the participating players, the tournament in Savannah will serve as a warm-up for the French Open, which takes place later in the month on the clay courts of Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.

In addition to the professional ATP matches, other events during the week-long festivities will include Kid’s Day on May 2, a Pro Am on May 3 and Ladies Day on May 4. The tournament will also feature an Adopt-a-Player program that will pair 32 local companies with Challenger players.

The tournament is free and open to the public. Kid’s Day clinics are $10 per person and open to the first 50 children between the ages of 7 and 16 years of age to register. The Pro-Am, in which 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Hospice Savannah, is $150 per person and open to the first eight men and eight women who register.
