National retailer Motherhood Maternity will open in Shops Six Hundred at Abercorn Common in the late spring or early summer.

The shopping center’s location at White Bluff Road and Abercorn Street continues to be the highest-traffic intersection in Savannah, said Anthony Wagner of sustainable brokerage firm Melaver Mouchet.

Abercorn Common has the only store in the region for a number of national retailers such as Circuit City, Home Goods and Michael’s.

Motherhood Maternity marks the first apparel company in the shopping center. Abercorn Common already has stores appealing to both men and women, from electronics to cosmetics, a spa and jewelry store as well as home décor and more.

“It’s a unique mix that continues to draw people in,” Wagner said.

Tenants are beginning to appreciate the public image benefit of being in an environmentally friendly shopping center, Wagner said. Customers more often comment about the pedestrian-friendly design and the center’s cleanliness and landscaping, which includes a relaxing fountain.

Featuring a solar water heater and a vegetated green roof, Shops Six Hundred is the second phase of Abercorn Common, the first retail center in the USA to receive the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification. LEED is the internationally-recognized standard for high performance, low water and energy use buildings awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Abercorn Common’s building design, white reflective roof and high efficiency heating and cooling systems make it 30 percent more energy efficient than a typical shopping center. The water-efficient features reduced usage by 30 percent compared to most shopping centers. Building professionals have toured the site to learn more about its design.

Melaver, Inc. is a third-generation, family-owned business based in Savannah, Georgia. The sustainable real estate developer currently has eight LEED certified projects in their portfolio and developed one of the first LEED certified buildings in the U.S. which is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Melaver Inc. also developed the first all-retail LEED shopping center in the country, Abercorn Common, including the first LEED McDonald’s worldwide.
