The Landings Club is pleased to announce that they will be
hosting the 2009 Tail $50,000.00 Pro Challenger to be held from
May 2 – 9, 2009 at the Franklin Creek Tennis Center on
Skidaway Island.
Challenger Tournaments are held for ATP players with a world
ranking of 40-200. Participants are usually full time tour
players that play in Challenger Tournaments to improve their
rankings and advance to Grand Slam events. Graduates of the
Challenger circuit include Jim Courier, John Isner and Andre
Agassi.
The timing of this tournament is significant because it will be
considered a warm up for the French Open. There are very few
Challenger Tournaments played on clay courts so this will be a
timely opportunity for players to prepare for the red clay of
Roland Garros Stadium.
The tournament will be unique to the City of Savannah and the
State of Georgia because there are no other events like it in
the state.
Challenger events are highly coveted, not easily obtainable and
will give us a wonderful opportunity to showcase our city. The
tournament will attract a minimum of 120 players and support
staff. This will create over 400 hotel nights, and revenue for
other sectors of Savannah including restaurants, tourist
activities, car rentals, etc.
In addition to the professional matches, the week long events
will include a Kid’s Day, Military Day, Seniors Day, and a
Pro Am where the proceeds will be donated to a local charity.
