The Savannah Mall Celebrates Youth Art Month

(SAVANNAH, GA) During the month of March, the Savannah Mall will use Dillard’s Court to showcase visual arts projects created by students from 53 area schools in recognition of National Youth Art Month (YAM). The theme of this year’s event is “Make it Pop!”

YAM is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art and art education for all children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. The YAM Exhibit at the Savannah Mall will kick off with an opening ceremony on Saturday, February 28 at 12 p.m. The ceremony will feature students from Bloomingdale Elementary performing excerpts from Peter Pan, pianists from Savannah Arts Academy, and a prize drawing at 1:30 p.m. The Youth Art Month exhibit will remain on display until Sunday, March 29.

“The arts are critical to a well rounded education in the 21st Century,” said Catriona Schaefer, teacher specialist for visual arts with Savannah Chatham County Public Schools. “They are an essential language through which we communicate with other cultures around the world. The arts develop the critical thinking and problem solving skills that allow our students to be competitive on the world stage. In our schools, the arts foster engagement by promoting active and complex learning.”

Established in 1961, YAM provides a forum for acknowledging skills that are not possible in other subjects. The Council for Art Education (CFAE), a sponsor of Youth Art Month, adopted the national theme, “Start With Art, Learn for Life.” The Council strives to promote that art education develops self-esteem, appreciation of the work of others, self-expression, cooperation with others, and critical thinking skills. CFAE regards these skills as “vital to the success of our future leaders – our children.”
