Tybee Island’s Seafood Festival

-Now Fact Not Fiction-

Tybee Island, Ga

Tybee Island has its first Seafood Festival.  Ask any Tybee resident if they have ever been to a Seafood Festival on Tybee and believe it or not, the answer is NO.   No one can remember, in recent years, there ever being a seafood festival on “Georgia’s Peach of a Beach”. Yet there are many great restaurants on the island and the demand for good seafood certainly warrants exploring the concept of a festival surrounding the delectable “catch” off the Georgia coast.

In the summer of 2009 a movie crew invaded Tybee’s beautiful beaches to make a movie called “The Last Song”.  The screenplay, written by Nicholas Sparks, called for scenes with a carnival surrounding a fictitious 37th annual Tybee Island Seafood Festival.  I remember walking around the area during the filming and being approached by tourists inquiring about the festival and where and when they could attend.  But in reality the signs posted were fictitious.

Now Tybee is hosting its First, 37th Annual Seafood Festival.  Similar to the movie set in nature; the event will feature carnival rides, and great seafood.  Unlike the movie, the food is real and anyone can pay to ride the rides.  Scheduled to begin with the rides on April 8 and culminate on Sunday April 11, the festival will feature rides adjacent to Butler Avenue (not on the beach as was the case with the movie) and an all day Seafood Festival on Saturday April 10.  The event is sponsored by Chatham County, Southern Eagle Distributing , Coca Cola and the Ocean Plaza. For a list of additional sponsors and Schedule dates and restaurants participating see the web site at www.tybeeseafoodfest.com.

This comes on the heels of the release of the movie, “The Last Song” featuring Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear.  The entertainment on Saturday will include the “Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love”, featuring the Bonaventure Horns from Thunderbolt providing great R & B music.  So come on out for the FIRST 37th Annual Tybee Island Seafood Festival, we’ll save a seat for you.
