SAVANNAH, Ga.— In an exciting step toward ensuring long-term sustainability, The Current has appointed Jeffrey Woolverton as the newsroom’s first Chief Revenue Officer.

In the four years since its launch as Georgia’s only nonprofit accountability news organization, The Current has seen substantial growth in individual donations and foundation grant support. Woolverton will leverage his two decades of experience in strategic revenue generation for nonprofits, including news organizations, to direct this growth.

“We are thrilled to have Jeffrey join us at The Current,” said Editor-in-Chief Margaret Coker. “His expertise and vision will be pivotal as we work to deepen our impact and expand our reach. With Jeffrey on board, we’re confident in our ability to enhance our financial stability and invest in the kind of journalism that matters most to our community.”

Woolverton previously held senior roles at Atlanta-based Boys & Girls Clubs of America, where he led a team that doubled major gift contributions over two years by raising more than $200 million.

In 2020, Woolverton worked at the Institute of Nonprofit News (INN) as Philanthropy Director, where he transformed fundraising capacity and increased major gifts across a network of more than 300 news organizations.

In 2021, he joined the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) as its first Chief Development Officer. He oversaw a team of professionals who generated revenue through fundraising activities, including foundations, corporations and individual donors.

At The Current, Woolverton will lead all revenue-related efforts. “In today’s challenging media landscape, we expect Jeffrey’s expertise in revenue diversification to be an invaluable asset to our organization,” said Coker.
