Hope Haven to Host Volunteer Training: Learn How to Bring Joy to Those Living with Dementia
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The training will be led by Robin Dill, a pioneer in the field who established the first dementia respite ministry in the state of Georgia.
The event is open to community members interested in learning how to bring happiness and meaningful social connection to individuals experiencing brain changes. The program fosters a vibrant, “social club” atmosphere that prioritizes dignity and joyful interaction, while simultaneously offering essential respite and support for caregivers and family members.
Hope Haven meets downtown on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in St. John’s Church’s Cranmer Hall, located at 27 W. Charlton St. Parking is provided for all volunteers.
Volunteer opportunities are designed to be flexible to accommodate various schedules. While weekly commitments are deeply appreciated, serving once a month still makes a significant impact on the program. Attending the upcoming training does not require a commitment to volunteer, and Hope Haven provides background checks for all incoming participants.
“We are looking for enthusiastic, positive, and loving people to join our team,” said Cathy Baxter, director of Hope Haven. “Our volunteers have a wonderful time too; it truly feels like a social club where everyone belongs.”
Available volunteer roles include:
-
Companion Crew: The program’s primary need; volunteers spend the day with members, providing purposeful social engagement as they move together through activities.
-
Breakfast Barista: Prepare and serve morning coffee and snacks.
-
Lunch Bunch: Help heat and serve lunch to the group.
-
Creative Contributors: Lead brief sessions such as art projects, chair exercises, spiritual devotions, or live music performances.
“Being part of Hope Haven has touched me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s an emotional experience in the most human sense offering dignity, patience, and genuine connection to people navigating brain changes. Seeing how a small act of kindness can bring comfort and spark a connection truly melts my heart and reminds me why I love being here.” said Hope Haven volunteer Carole Wilson.
