Savannah Country Day Senior Molly Logan Holmes Receives Top Honors from Two Prestigious Universities

(Savannah Country Day School, Savannah, GA) Molly Logan Holmes, a Savannah Country Day School senior, has been named a Foundation Scholar at the University of Georgia. In addition to the UGA honors, Molly has also been awarded a Jefferson Scholarship from the University of Virginia.

Since 1972 the University of Georgia has selected qualified students to participate in the Foundation Fellows Program. The program was established by trustees of the University of Georgia Foundation to create an enhanced educational experience for superior undergraduate students. The UGA Foundation Fellowship is the University’s premier scholarship, focusing on developing entering first-year students into outstanding leaders and scholars.

Selection of program participants is based on grades, test scores, co-curricular accomplishments, recommendations, and an essay. Applicants are expected to have a minimum GPA of 3.70, and a combined SAT score of 1400 (critical reading and math only) or ACT score of 31. UGA chooses only 25 students each year to receive the distinct honor.

The Fellowship provides in-state student an annual stipend of $9,000, in addition to the HOPE Scholarship. As a Foundation Scholar, Molly will also take part in scholarship-funded events such as international travel-study programs, dinner seminars, mentor relationships with faculty, research or conference activities, and the enhanced academic opportunities of the University’s Honors Program.

Molly was also recognized by the University of Virginia with a Jefferson Scholarship. This auspicious honor is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, scholarship, and citizenship.

Out of state Jefferson Scholars for the 2006-07 academic year received $35,610 to cover  tuition, room, board, books, and miscellaneous expenses. The scholarship covers four years of attendance at the University of Virginia.

Jefferson scholars for last year’s entering class represented16 states and the District of Columbia. 100% of the scholars were in the top 10% of their high school graduating class, and the average combined SAT score for last year’s scholars was 2246 with 26 students scoring a perfect 800 on SAT math, verbal, or writing section.

Candidates for a Jefferson Scholarship are nominated by their participating schools. Out of almost 1,000 nominees, around 100 are selected as finalists. Students who reach finalist status then go to the University of Virginia campus to participate in Jefferson Scholars Selection Weekend. Activities include participation in seminars led by University professors, a written exercise, a math/logic exam, and personal interviews. The size for recent classes of Jefferson Scholars is typically around 33.

According to Savannah Country Day College Counselor Mary Beth Fry, “Molly Holmes is an extraordinary student:  thoughtful, deeply intelligent, and remarkably talented. She has an enormous capacity for hard work, and a laser-like focus on her goals. Of course, Molly has always been invested in her success in school, but more than that, she seems to relish–and seek out–academic challenge. Molly is a true scholar; we are all tremendously proud of her.”

Along with being a dedicated student academically, Molly has been active in Country Day’s Theatre 15 group, having featured or starring roles in many of the school’s dramatic productions. She is an avid community volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Clean Coast, and Project Read at the Wesley Center. She also plays Varsity Volleyball for the Savannah Country Day Lady Hornets.

Savannah Country Day School is a pre-k through twelve independent school that seeks to prepare students of academic and personal promise to meet with confidence, imagination, and integrity the challenges of college and of life. In partnership with supportive families, we strive to cultivate in each student the desire and the discipline to grow wise, to lead lives of personal honor, to appreciate beauty, to pursue physical well being, and to serve others with a generous and compassionate spirit.
