HEALTHY SAVANNAH AND CHATHAM COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCE JAN. 23 HEALTH FAIR AND CAMPAIGN TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION

(SAVANNAH, GA) Healthy Savannah and the Chatham County Health Department are partnering to offer a cervical cancer awareness and screening event on January 23rd at the health department clinic at 1395 Eisenhower Drive. Cervical cancer kills thousands of women each year, but many of these deaths can be prevented through vaccination and screening. The event will include door prizes, drawings and opportunities to learn about healthy living. A health clinic will also be available for those who wish to be screened for cervical cancer via pap smear or receive the HPV vaccine.

80K GRANT FROM SPP

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah Philanthropic Partners (SPP) has awarded $80,000 in grants to two prominent childcare organizations in the area. The grants, which aim to enhance the region’s early childhood education and care services, include a $50,000 award to Kicklighter Academy and a $30,000 grant to Wesley Community Centers of Savannah, Inc.

SAVANNAH CHATHAM FOOD POLICY COUNCIL SETS PRIORITIES FOR 2025, STARTING WITH COMMUNITY GARDENS

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Savannah Chatham Food Policy Council has identified three top priorities it plans to pursue beginning in 2025 to ensure communities across Chatham County have equitable access to affordable, nutritious, locally and sustainably grown food. The Council has already begun developing a plan that prioritizes areas of greatest need, starting with the development of policy, systems, and environmental change opportunities for community gardening as its first project. The Council is supported by the five-year, $5.1 million (REACH) grant, administered by Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia.

COASTAL GEORGIA INDICATORS COALITION RELEASES 2023 STATUS REPORT, SHOWING STRIDES IN INCOME, HEALTH AND EDUCATION

(SAVANNAH, GA) The 2023 Status Report for the Chatham Community Blueprint, a strategic plan completed in 2015 with a 20-year vision of a thriving future for Chatham County, was issued on December 4, 2024 and reported on 29 key indicators. Some of those indicators:

• Economy: Per Capita Income rose 7.9%.

• Education: The Graduation rate increased 1.5% from the prior school year. SCCPSS also reports that 53.3% of students in grades 9-12 show content mastery.

• Health: The age-adjusted death rate due to suicide decreased by 2.1 deaths per 100,000.

• Quality of Life: Recidivism rates, which is the tendency of a convicted criminal to re-offend, rose both for juveniles and adults, indicating this is an area for increased focus. For adults, the rate was up 8.2% and for juveniles, the rate increased 2% from the last reporting period.

SAVANNAH TREE FOUNDATION

(SAVANNAH, GA) In 2024, Savannah Tree Foundation planted 426 trees across 23 sites in Chatham County. The organization gave away 2,874 more across Coastal Georgia, adding 3,300 trees to the urban forest. That’s more than a 150% increase over last year. STF volunteers donated 1,094 hours of their time, also more than doubling 2023’s numbers.
