(SAVANNAH, GA) The YMCA of Coastal Georgia and Healthy Savannah are piloting an expansion of the Fresh Express monthly fresh food distribution with a pop-up event May 27 at Waters Ave and 40th Street, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The no-cost food distribution aims to provide access to fresh fruits, vegetables and bread in neighborhoods with insecure access to healthy foods. Fresh Express’ current distributions take place on the third Friday of each month at Curtis V. Cooper Primary Health at 106 E Broad Street, and the Moses Jackson Advancement Center at 1410 Richards Street.

(SAVANNAH, GA) The YMCA of Coastal Georgia is partnering with Totes to Tots and the Georgia Department of Human Services to collect new and gently-used suitcases and backpacks between now and their Healthy Kids Day event on May 7 to benefit the 304 children currently in Chatham County’s foster care system. Many foster children have to move from location to location with their belongings packed in a garbage bag. Bags can be dropped off at the Habersham, West Chatham, Islands, Tybee and Effingham branches, or at the Habersham branch’s Healthy Kids Day event where Totes for Tots will be present to celebrate the drive’s success. COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT WORKS TO COMBAT UPTICK IN VAPING RATES
(WSAV) Georgia’s Tobacco 21 law took effect in July 2020 — but officials say awareness was overshadowed because of the pandemic. The new law makes it illegal to sell cigarettes and tobacco or vapor products to those under 21. Non-compliance will result in a misdemeanor. The CHD recently organized an awareness campaign to shed light on the rules. Officials said it comes as the use of tobacco and e-cigarette products is growing in high schools.
