Southeast District F Special Recognition Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Savannah, GA) Dazhong Wu, a Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering at the Georgia
Institute of Technology, was recently awarded the ASME Southeast District F Special
Recognition Award for 2011-2012. Special Recognition Award is to recognize individuals
who have taken a leadership role and have demonstrated the commitment and enthusiasm
to accomplish, in an outstanding manner, a specific program or activity in support of the
District.

Wu has been a student member of ASME since 2009. He was the Chairman of ASME
Savannah section and played a vital role in its revitalization from Spring 2010 to Fall
2011, wherein the ASME Savannah section, had been inactive for a number of years. With
respect to revitalizing the ASME Savannah section, Dazhong worked vigorously upon being
Chairman of ASME Savannah section. He played multiple key roles during the revitalization,
which went above and beyond the expectation from a student member of ASME, as the leader
of ASME Savannah section revitalization project and Chairman of both senior and student
sections. He had a series of outstanding accomplishments that have tremendous impact on the
ASME Savannah section as follows:

In July of 2010, as the 1st milestone, he launched the revitalization project by establishing
the Executive Committee of ASME Savannah section. In order to spread out the latest news
and events at ASME Savannah section, he created the first, well organized and professional
official website for ASME Savannah. In order to get student members ready to enter into
the job market, Dazhong initiated a technical seminar series, called “Seminar for Success”,
with a focus on career path development and equipping students with technical skills for
entering into the market. In July of 2011, inspired by Present Obama’s new policy “No Child
Left Behind”, Dazhong launched a collaborative project with a local home school, Kingdom
Builders Homeschool Co-op (http://kingdombuilderscoop.com/) usually dealing with children
between the ages of 10 to 14 years. The purpose of the this fellowship was to provide free
technical training workshops at Georgia Tech campus for the first LEGO League Robotics
Competition and provide partial sponsorship for one of the teams. The ASME Savannah
sponsored team won the Mechanical Design Award at this year’s local first Lego League
Robotics Competition.
