(SAVANNAH, GA) The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) invites Savannah area businesses and groups to participate in the second annual “Time Starts Now!” Competition. The event will be held Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Benedictine Military School’s gym. Teams will compete in “Minute To Win It”-style challenges, building confidence, raising funds and having fun all at the same time. Proceeds will benefit Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society programs and activities.
“It’s always fun to raise money for a good cause, but the people involved in this event had smiles plastered on their faces for the entire event. And for hours after!” said event emcee and WSAV Anchor, Andrew Davis.
Each team of ten members or half-team of five members will receive a competition t-shirt, dinner ticket, and two drink tickets. Dinner will be catered by Corleone’s Trattoria. The full team entry fee is $ 1,000 and the half-team entry fee is $500. Prizes and gifts will be awarded to the winning team and door prizes will also be drawn throughout the evening. Competitors should arrive by 6:00 p.m. and the games begin promptly at 6:30 pm.
Event Chairperson Marcie Moxley believes this event is a perfect fit for the LDSS organization. “One of the main goals of LDSS is to promote awareness and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome. The first step in reaching that understanding is realizing that everyone has value and something special to offer the world. This is as true for those with Down syndrome as it is for you and me,” she said.
The idea for this business-centric competition developed several years ago after Moxley attended the annual LDSS Night of Champions, which recognizes Savannah-area businesses which employ differently-abled adults, including those with Down Syndrome, and celebrates the contributions made by these employees. “It dawned on me that local businesses that are already in competition with each other could come together to raise funds for a great cause, do some networking, and also get in some friendly and fun competition – away from the workplace,” Moxley added.
Spectators are invited to attend and cheer on their favorite team. For more information, call Marcie Moxley at 912-713-6865 or visit www.timestartsnow.org
