Enmark Stations Raises $2,000 for Savannah Heritage YMCA

(SAVANNAH, GA) Matching proceeds raised from Peter Brodhead’s lecture, the first of five lectures in the Enmark Encourage Health Educational Series 2014, Enmark Stations raised $2,000 for West Broad Street YMCA. The nonprofit also raised funds during the Enmark Dollar Day, receiving $1 for every car wash, $1 at their charity table and $1 donations from Enmark customers.

Enmark presented the check to Chiquita Hanna, Operations Director at West Broad Street YMCA at the second Enmark Encourage Health Educational Lecture on Tuesday, April 29.

Explaining that the funds will be used for summer camp scholarships, Hanna said, “Our mission is to put christian principles into practice through programs to build a healthy mind, spirit and body for all. This donation helps us to enroll children who would not normally be able to attend our summer camp.”

Enmark partnered with Healthy Savannah, the Savannah Morning News, Savannah Magazine and WJCL to present this premier series of five wellness lectures benefiting local nonprofit organizations focused on Wellness.

The Encourage Health Educational Series happens on the last Tuesday of the months of February, April, June, August and October. The series features presentations from the area’s most respected experts sharing insights on nutrition, fitness and general tips for healthy living. The next Encourage Health Education Lecture will be Tuesday, June 24, with John Bennett, Executive Director of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign, detailing ’Five Ways to Make Bicycling a Healthy Part of Your Daily Life.’ Proceeds for this lecture will go to the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

Lunch and Lecture Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door. Checks should be made payable to the benefiting charity for that particular lecture. Enmark will match all proceeds and will present a check to the designated charity at each of the lectures. For more information, visit http://myenmarkenjoy.com/Files/EncourageHealth

Goodwill of the Coastal Empire Seeking Youth Mentors for GoodGuides Program

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

Goodwill of the Coastal Empire Seeking Youth Mentors for GoodGuides Program

(SAVANNAH, GA) Goodwill of the Coastal Empire is seeking positive role models for the GoodGuides Youth Mentoring Program. The GoodGuides program serves youth between the ages of 12 and 17 by helping them build career plans and skills to prepare for school completion, post-secondary training and productive work.

To become a mentor, individuals must be willing to make a one-year commitment to the program, meet with a mentee in person at least once a month and correspond weekly with the mentee via email. A background check will also be required.

Representatives will available Wednesday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at the Sallie Mood Goodwill Job Connection Center, located at 7220 Sallie Mood Drive, and Pooler Goodwill Job Connection, located at 115 Grand Central Blvd to meet with anyone interested in becoming a mentor.

The GoodGuides program seeks to improve outcomes for more than 2,640 youth in high-risk situations across the United States.

“The unemployment rate for youth ages 16 to 19 is currently nearly 21 percent, three times the national average for the full working population,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Goodwill’s GoodGuides program helps to keep these youth on the right path, despite the employment challenges they face. The result is stronger families and better communities.”

The Goodwill GoodGuides program began in 2009 with a $19.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Delinquency Prevention. Goodwill Industries International dispersed that original grant to 56 independent Goodwill agencies in 38 states around the country. This new phase of Goodwill GoodGuides® is made possible through a $9 million three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. This will provide for additional training and mentor support, advocacy and teaching roles for mentors, expanded parent engagement and more structured activities at 22 Goodwill agencies around the United States.

Mother Daughter 5K to Benefit Savannah Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Mothers and Daughters Together 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center, located at 1 International Dr. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Savannah Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

The Mothers and Daughters Together 5K is part of Jessica DeLoach’s LLS Women of the Year Fundraising Campaign in helping fight childhood cancer.

“There is something special about completing a goal together,” DeLoach said. “Overcoming a challenge together can create a memory, a special bond that can help bridge the gap in hard times, sweeten the celebration during the good times. The best part of spending this kind of time together is it creates quality time.”

Teams must include at least 2 runners, max of 6. The registration fee is $30, which includes a shirt and photo download. Girls nine-years or younger will not be required to register. The team with the highest cumulative age will be awarded pedicures, massages, lunch and few relaxing hours at the Heavenly Spa by Westin. The appointment is booked for 11:00pm after the race. For more information on the Mothers and Daughters Together 5K, visit http://www.savannahraces.com./#!mother-daughter-5k/c1xhm

Jessica DeLoach currently works at Bernard Williams and Company. She has two children. When asked why she kicked off her campaign, DeLoach said, “As a parent, I cannot imagine missing firsts with my children as the families affected by blood cancer do. Spending holidays in hospitals, time away from the comforts of home, and just not having the ‘normalcy’ of childhood to cherish. We candidates are the mechanism to raise money but the cause is the real winner.”

“Dirty” 5K Race Raises a Clean $10K for Savannah Charities

(SAVANNAH, GA) The Big Nasty Mud Run (BNMR) x5, bringing over 1,200 competitors from as far away as Connecticut, raised $10,000 for local charities. The 4.7 mile obstacle mud run, held at the Bloomingdale Big Nasty ATV Park on April 5, was the most recent race from Endurance Race Services Savannah, an organization that coordinates many fundraising races for local charities.

A total of $10,000 was donated to charities to invest in youth programs, including: Local ROTC, which provides training and scholarships to high school and college students preparing for careers in the military; The Grid Iron Group, supporting Richmond Hill High School football; Performance Initiatives, to serve inner-city kids; The Fellowship of Christian Athletes for National Ministry Outreach; Guardians of the Pink Ribbon – Savannah Chapter, part of a national organization of fire fighters and other volunteers whose mission is to raise awareness about breast cancer; and Savannah Christian Church Missions.

“It was a great time!” said participant Sarah Dodge. Dodge, whose husband is with the 3rd 160th Night Stalkers at Hunter Army Air Field, said she and a friend, also an Army wife, participated together. “I made every obstacle but one,” said Dodge, who had just given birth to her first child in late October of last year. “I was surprised at how strong I still am,” she said. “I want to do it again next year.” Dodge and her comrade finished together, both covered in mud from head to toe. “I had to wash my hair three times and used 15 Q-Tips to clean out my ears,” said Dodge.

“We think the BNMR is best done in teams,” said co-founder of Endurance Race Services, Dan Pavlin. “It is why we encourage everyone to register in one of our team waves. But when you do, you must run and finish with your team mate.” Pavlin is a Vice President of Commercial Lines at Bernard Williams & Company in Savannah, an active and ongoing sponsor of Endurance Race Services.

Pavlin said he enjoys helping charities through Race Management. "Racing gives me the opportunity to serve the community, raise money for local charities, build relationship through fitness, and it is a lot of fun managing that kind of chaos,” Pavlin said.

Registration for the Big Nasty Mud Run x6 will soon be available at www.savannahraces.com , as are many other charitable race events. Endurance Race Services Savannah also accepts applications from local charities for new fundraising race events on its website.

The American Red Cross Announces Second Annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

(SAVANNAH, GA) On Saturday, April 19, The American Red Cross will host the Second Annual Lori Dunham Gordon Memorial Blood Drive at the Savannah Mall, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The blood drive will be located on the lower level of the Savannah Mall, near Center Court and across from GNC. Donors will be entered to win several giveaways, including a 32-inch TV. T-shirts will also be handed out for those who give blood. To donate, individuals must be 17 years or older, and weigh at least 110 pounds.

“My wife died from colon cancer at a very early age,” Mr. Gordon, the organizer for this blood drive said. “She was a nurse, who loved to help people. During her treatment, she needed several blood transfusions, which would not have been possible without the help of the Red Cross. I started this blood drive as a way to pay-it-forward to other patients.”

According to The American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. One donation can help save the lives of up to three people. Although an estimated 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, less than 10% actually do each year.

“By the time Lori was diagnosed, the cancer was already in stage four,” Mr. Gordon said. “Through events like our blood drive, I am fighting for early awareness. Everyone, men and women, should get colon checks at 40 not 50. We were very thankful for the blood that was available for Lori. This blood drive will help others to get better by creating a supply for the American Red Cross.”

“Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare,” said Colleen Waldorf, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative. “Many life-saving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply.”

It is suggested that donors drink plenty of fluids, wear clothing with sleeves that can easily be rolled up, and bring a list of medications that may be in their system. For more information about the donation process, visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood/donation-process#t1

ABOUT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD PROGRAM
Started in 1940, under the leadership of Dr. Charles Drew, the American Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply, and provides blood for patients in approximately 2,700 hospitals across the U.S. The Red Cross makes blood available to any patient who needs it — patients are not required to find donors to replace the blood they use (a practice common in Europe and some U.S. blood banks) allowing the patient and their family to focus on recovery. Eighty percent of the blood donations given to the Red Cross are collected at mobile blood drives set up at community organizations, companies, high schools, colleges, places of worship or military installations. The remaining 20 percent are collected at fixed Red Cross donor centers. The American Red Cross works with more than 50,000 blood drive sponsors each year to hold more than 200,000 blood drives, providing convenient locations for people to give blood.
