(Beaufort, SC)  Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty proudly introduces to the market, the Edgar Fripp House, Tidalholm; circa 1853, also commonly called “The Big Chill House”

Edgar Fripp reportedly built this imposing Italianate style home to escape the summer heat of his Sea Island cotton plantation. This extraordinary property is considered one of the finest historic estates in the south and has been the backdrop for the Hollywood films, “The Big Chill" and “The Great Santini”. Offering sweeping views of the Beaufort River and the Intracoastal Waterway, the home faces south in order to catch the prevailing southern sea breezes. Tidalholm sits on a private peninsula in Beaufort’s prominent historic “Point” neighborhood. During the Civil War, the home was owned by Edgar and Eliza Fripp’s nephew, James Fripp, and the house served as Union Hospital #7. Legend has it that the house was sold for unpaid back taxes during the closing months of the war and a Frenchman visiting in the area purchased the house and deeded it back to the Fripp family.

The estate served as a famous guest house from the 1930’s to the 1970’s and entertained many artists, authors and statesmen. The house was converted back to private use in 1974.

The home features original flooring, millwork and plaster moldings. Grand and welcoming, a wide center hall is flanked by stately dining and living rooms. These three rooms work to create an elegant entertaining space. A comfortable paneled library, powder bath, spacious eat-in kitchen, and bedroom with an adjacent full bath complete the main floor living. The sweeping original staircase leads to the upper level offering a sitting area, four bedrooms, and four baths. Spacious double verandas wrap around the T-shaped house and overlook the grounds and the river beyond, allowing the seasonal breezes to be enjoyed from all directions.

Tucked away in one corner of Tidalholm’s grounds, there exists a small two bedroom guest cottage. Of significant import to the property is it’s private dock, providing access to the Intracoastal Waterway from an offset creek. Giant live oaks and mature gardens complete the estate.

Located in the heart of Beaufort’s National Historic Landmark District, Tidalholm is a short walk from a number of fine restaurants, shops, an outstanding waterfront park, and a marina. An exceedingly important and rare opportunity, Tidalholm is being offered for $4,500,000.
