HEALTHY SAVANNAH ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR FAITH BASED BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENTS

Healthy Savannah is providing $7000 in grant funding to support six Back-to-School and other community events planned by faith community partners. Funds were granted to applicable projects that include COVID-19 and flu awareness activities and vaccine clinics. Upcoming events include a “Back to School Block Party” on August 27 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at Greater Gaines Chapel AME Church; “Reaching Others For Health and Hope” on September 17 from 11:00 am -3:00 pm at Faith Deliverance Church; and “Community Awareness Day,” on September 17 from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm at First Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.

HEALTHY SAVANNAH REVEALS SURVEY RESULTS AT STAKEHOLDERS’ MEETING

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannahians want more community-based solutions that promote healthy food and physical activity where they live, work and play. The findings of a year-long survey conducted by Healthy Savannah were revealed at its CDC Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Stakeholders’ Meeting on August 19. About 40 stakeholders were in attendance, representing Savannah and Chatham County organizations committed to elevating the health and wellness of the community.

FREE ORAL HEALTH CLINIC AUGUST 27 & 28
(SAVANNAH, GA) The Chatham County Safety Net Planning Council will present its 2nd Annual Free Adult Oral Health Event on August 27 & 28 at the Garden City Recreation Department, 160 Priscilla D. Thomas Way in Garden City. The clinic will provide oral exams, oral cancer screenings, fillings, cleanings, extractions and hearing exams to Chatham County residents 18 and over. HEALTHY SAVANNAH CALLS ON COMMUNITY TO WEIGH IN ON NUTRITION AND FOOD INSECURITY

MENINGITIS VACCINE CLINICS FOR TEENS

(CHATHAM COUNTY, GA)The Chatham County Health Department will hold several meningitis vaccination clinics for teens in July and August to help local students get up to date on required school vaccines. This fall, all Georgia students going into 11th grade who are at least 16 years of age must receive a booster shot to protect against meningitis. Vaccination events for teens will continue at the Eisenhower Clinic at 1395 Eisenhower Drive on August 25, 3-6 p.m. Appointments are required and can be scheduled online at coastalhealthdistrict.org/teenclinic or by calling the Chatham County Health Department at 912-356-2441.

TELFAIR MUSEUM DAYS

NORAVAZ COVID-19 VACCINE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT
(COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT) A new type of COVID-19 vaccine is now available in the Coastal Health District. The Novavax shot is the fourth COVID vaccine to be cleared by the FDA in the U.S. and relies on an older, more familiar vaccine technology. Novavax is a two-dose vaccine and is available in the health departments in Chatham and Glynn counties and in the Richmond Hill clinic of the Bryan County Health Department. There is no out-of-pocket cost for vaccination. Appointments for the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine can be scheduled online at chdcovidvax.org, or by calling the Chatham, Glynn, or Bryan County Health Departments.

FRESH EXPRESS EXPANDS WITH THIRD SITE
(SAVANNAH, GA) The YMCA of Coastal Georgia and Healthy Savannah has expanded the Fresh Express no-cost fresh food distribution program to a third site and its own day! The third site is at 40th and Waters and upcoming dates are: September 2, October 7, November 4, December 2. The main locations are at Curtis V. Cooper Family Health and the Moses Jackson Center, with these upcoming dates: August 19, September 16, October 21, November 18, December 16. Fresh Express provided more than 6,600 pounds of fresh fruits, vegetables and bread to communities with low access to fresh foods in 2021. Interested in volunteering? By identifying potential barriers to safe, active transportation and physical activity, the organizations are working to create more equitable access to walking and biking routes within Savannah communities and throughout the City, including the Tide To Town urban trail system.

(COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT) Beginning next week, the Bryan and Chatham County Health Departments will expand their COVID vaccination programs to include vaccine for young children. Chatham County will offer the Pfizer vaccine for anyone 6 months of age or older. The Bryan County Health Department will offer Moderna vaccine for children aged 6 months to 5 years, and anyone age 12 and older. HEALTHY CORNER STORE INITIATIVE WELCOMES A SEVENTH STORE BRINGING PRODUCE TO SAVANNAH’S UNDESERVED COMMUNITIES
(SAVANNAH, GA) A seventh store is now participating in the Healthy Corner Store Initiative. In 2019, Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s received a joint $3.4 million Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant that enabled the establishment of the program which encourages local corner store owners to stock fresh fruits and vegetables for their customers. Stores currently participating include Nitis Gas at 1263 US-80, Chevron at 3014 Skidaway Rd., Zack’s Quick Stop at 2701 Ogeechee Rd., A-1 Foodmart at 902 Pennsylvania Ave., Shiv Food Mart at 4602 Skidaway Rd, Eagle One Market at 2120 W Bay St., and now, the Circle K in Georgetown.
