HEALTHY CHECKOUT INITIATIVE LAUNCHES IN SAVANNAH
(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannahians who live in low-income neighborhoods often have a poor quality diet and the health problems associated with it. Now, Healthy Savannah, the City of Savannah and local grocery stores are using grant funds to tackle that problem where it starts for many families – at the grocery store checkout aisle. Participating stores are ensuring fresh produce and other healthy choices are attractively displayed near the checkout lines. The first grocers to join the effort are the Savannah area Red and White stores.
Healthy Savannah aims to make the healthy choice the easy choice. The organization seeks to improve lives through policy, systems, and environmental change. We are in the midst of a national awakening to the need for and lack of health and racial equity. Yet Healthy Savannah, through its community outreach, partnerships, and collaborations has been uniting our disparate and/or low-wealth neighborhoods and citizens to effect meaningful, sustainable change. HEALTHY SAVANNAH AND COASTAL YMCA SEEKING COMMUNITY ADVOCATES FOR FLU AND COVID-19 PREVENTION
(SAVANNAH CEO) Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia are reminding area residents that there’s still time to get a flu vaccine. December 5-11 is National Influenza Vaccination Week, a national awareness week focused on highlighting the importance of influenza vaccination. The organizations are also recruiting community members to continue a community-based health awareness initiative designed to raise COVID-19 and flu awareness and increase vaccine access in communities at high risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death due to COVID-19 or flu.
HEALTHY SAVANNAH URGES DONATIONS OF HEALTHY FOODS DURING HOLIDAYS
(SAVANNAH, GA) Nearly 160,000 people in Coastal Georgia struggle with food insecurity and many families turn to food pantries for additional assistance, especially during the holidays. Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of the Coastal Georgia, administrators of the five-year, $3.4 million grant called Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH), are encouraging those who can donate to others during this holiday season to provide healthy options, such as canned fruits in 100% fruit juice, dried fruits, and low sodium canned products. Donations of whole-grain bread and pasta and breakfast cereals, along with proteins such as canned tuna in water, are also encouraged.

The Health Effective Resource Organizations, or HERO Help Me, is a database that refers its users to over 1,000 critical resources in Chatham County. The database is a one-stop shop for a variety of resources and services, such as healthcare providers, food assistance and nutrition, childcare, housing, physical activity, education, COVID-19 and flu information, and many more.
SAVANNAH CIVIC CENTER COVID-19 TESTING SITE HOLIDAY SCHEDULE
(CHATHAM COUNTY, GA) Some adjustments are being made to the Savannah Civic Center COVID-19 testing site to accommodate other events scheduled to take place there in December and January. Testing will be offered Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. throughout the month of December, except for December 24th 25th, and 31st when the site will be closed for the holidays. No testing will be offered at the Savannah Civic Center on Saturdays in December. There will be no COVID-19 testing at the Savannah Civic Center during the month of January.
