LESSONS LEARNED FROM COVID-19

MUSICAL HORIZONS

(SAVANNAH PHILHARMONIC) SavPhil continues their partnership with Horizons to serve students in kindergarten-8th grade through a 6-week summer camp June 6 to July 1, followed by a second “Experience Week” camp July 6 to July 8. The camps will feature something for every student, including a general music class, violin instruction, a choir, and a middle school music club focused on electronic music composition. YMCA PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SWIM INSTRUCTION

(YMCA OF COASTAL GEORGIA) As part of the Y’s commitment to reduce drowning rates and keep kids safe in and around the water, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia will provide scholarships for swim instruction and water safety to children from underserved communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatal drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages one to 14 years old. In ethnically diverse communities, the youth drowning rate is two to three times higher than the national average, according to a USA Swimming study. YMCA PARTNERSHIP WITH TOTES TO TOTS FOR FOSTER CARE SUITCASE DRIVE RESOUNDING SUCCESS

(YMCA OF COASTAL GEORGIA) During the month of April, five YMCA of Coastal Georgia branches collected new and gently used suitcases, duffel bags and backpacks to be donated to Chatham County foster children, with the drive culminating at the Habersham Branch’s 30th anniversary Healthy Kids Day Event, Saturday, May 7. Partners from Totes to Tots, the Georgia Department of Human Services and DFCS joined the Y team at the event to celebrate wrapping up the drive. The month-long collection took place at the Habersham, Islands, Tybee, West Chatham and Effingham branches to benefit the 304 children in Chatham County’s foster system, with the goal of collecting at least one bag for each child, and the goal was wildly succeeded with more than 400 bags donated.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has become an advocate for Georgia’s coastal waters and through a NOAA partnership with Savannah State University, Georgia’s first public university for African Americans, is working to diversify NOAA’s workforce. During the past 20 years, Hoskins-Brown’s work has made the historically black university one of the nation’s top producers of marine science graduates— some of whom are now working for NOAA studying how climate change is impacting fisheries and coastal communities. COASTAL HEALTH DISTRICT REMINDS RETAILERS OF TOBACCO 21 LAW

(WTGS) Georgia Dept. of Health, Coastal Health District and Healthy Savannah have launched a new campaign with Savannah area retailers on Georgia’s Tobacco 21 Law. Coastal Health District officials said they want the community to be aware of the law since it was passed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgia’s Tobacco 21 Law was passed in July 2020, making it unlawful for any person to sell or barter, directly or indirectly any cigarettes, tobacco products, tobacco-related objects, alternative nicotine products, or vapor products to any individual under the age of 21. The law also makes it unlawful for anyone under 21 to purchase such products or for anyone to purchase such products for those under 21. It also prohibits vaping within a school safety zone.
