Case Veterinary Hospital, who is preparing to kick off its countdown to 100
years in service, hosted 11 area high school students on March 28. The scheduled
visit was part of the Vocational Endorsement Program. The program allows
students from all the area high schools to visit local businesses and
organizations to learn more about a variety of occupations.
Students have previously visited the public library, Savannah Technical College
and area car dealerships. Job Coach Shelly Jagdeo scheduled the trip after many
of the students expressed an interest in seeing how an actual veterinary
practice works. Upon calling Case Veterinary Hospital, Jagdeo found that they
were receptive to the idea and scheduling the tour was easy.
The students found it all very interesting, says Jagdeo. One of the students
is considering becoming a veterinarian assistant.
Much of the tour consisted of walking the facilities and seeing the wide range
of technological advances such as the Digital Dental X-ray Unit, Laser Surgery
Suite and the Endoscopy Equipment. However, fourth generation veterinarian Dr.
Carla Case-McCorvey made sure the event was interactive. Students were given the
opportunity to view x-ray film the same way a veterinarian would and were
encouraged to figure out what they were looking and what, if anything, was
wrong.
The students participate in the program for the duration of a semester. At the
semesters conclusion, a new group of students will form. Jagdeo said they would
definitely return and it was a productive experience for everyone.
