During Operation Iraqi Freedom III, the Marne Assault Battalion conducted 231 air assaults and raids, safely transported nearly 132,000 coalition forces and flew 26,000 combat hours—more than any other UH-60 Blackhawk Battalion in recent history.

The 3rd Infantry Division came to be known as the “Marne Division” after World War I.  While under a barrage of enemy fire the 3rd Division Soldiers stood solid as a rock at the Marne River in France, taking the brunt of what was to be the last German offensive of the war, known as the famous "Peace Storm."  This feat of arms, in which they stood their ground like a rock at the Marne, was called "…one of the most brilliant pages in the annals of military history" and earned the 3rd Infantry Division the proud nickname: "The Marne Division."  The 3rd ID has one of the most successful combat records of any U.S. Ar my division.  It has paid a high price for this distinction, suffering nearly 35,000 wartime casualties.  www.stewart.army.mil
