The Landings Club is pleased to announce it is hosting the Association of Tennis Professionals Tail 2009 Savannah Challenger, May 2-10, 2009, at the Franklin Creek Tennis Center on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia.
Tail Activewear, a leading brand in women’s golf and tennis apparel, is the title sponsor of the event, and the Greater Savannah Sports Council is the event’s Presenting Sponsor.
Challenger Tournaments are held for ATP players who hold a world ranking of 40 to 200. Participants are typically full-time tour players who play in Challenger Tournaments to improve their rankings and advance to Grand Slam events. Graduates of the Challenger circuit include Jim Courier, John Isner and Andre Agassi.
The Tail 2009 Savannah Challenger is significant because it is considered a warm up for the French Open, which takes place May 24-June 7, 2009. In addition, because very few Challenger Tournaments are held on clay courts, playing on the clay courts of the Franklin Creek Tennis Center will provide a timely opportunity for participants as they prepare for the red clay of Roland Garros Stadium in Paris.
The tournament is the only one of its kind in the city of Savannah and in the state of Georgia and will attract a minimum of 64 players plus support staff and officials. The tournament will create more than 400 nights of hotel stay, as well as revenue for other sectors of Savannah including restaurants, tour businesses, car rental companies and more.
In addition to the professional ATP matches, other events during the week-long festivities will include a Kid’s Day, Ladies Day, and Pro Am in which 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to Hospice Savannah.
The tournament will also feature an Adopt-a-Player program that will pair 32 local companies with Challenger players. Participating companies will serve as a host to their assigned players, offering them tours of the city, taking them to dinner, answering their questions, etc. In turn, the participating companies will have an opportunity to meet their players during their initial matches and receive two tickets to their players’ subsequent games.
