(SAVANNAH, GA)In recognition of National Youth Art Month (YAM), the Savannah Mall will showcase 34 artwork panels created by local youth. Unveiling March 1, the displays will feature creative works from students in Chatham County public schools.
YAM is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children, and to encourage support for quality school art programs. This year’s theme is “Folk Art on my Mind.”
Created in 1961, YAM is focused on expanding and creating art programs in schools, as it recognizes art education as imperative for developing divergent and critical thinking, multi-cultural awareness, and technical, communication and expressive skills. The Council for Art Education (CFAE), a sponsor of Youth Art Month, adopted the national theme, “Start With Art, Learn for Life.”
Catriona Schaefer, from the Chatham County Board Of Education, said, “Youth Art Month, which is sponsored by The Council for Art Education, provides a venue for our students to showcase their learning from Kindergarten through the 12th grade, and it applauds their efforts, talents, and skills. We are very fortunate that our district recognizes and supports access to the arts in our schools, as we develop the next generation of leaders.”
The Youth Art Month display will be on exhibit at the Savannah Mall until March 31.
