Fox & Weeks presents $1000 Matthews Children’s Foundation Grant to Matthew Reardon Center for Autism

SAVANNAH – Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors presented a Matthews Children’s Foundation grant in the amount of $1000 to the Matthew Reardon Center for Autism to help the facility purchase additional computer equipment for its students.

Fox & Weeks has now awarded nearly $40,000 in Matthew’s Children’s Foundation grants since 2012. Each time a family purchases a casket at Fox & Weeks, a portion of the cost is donated to the Matthews Children’s Foundation in the name of the deceased and the accumulated funds are distributed quarterly through an application process to area non-profits benefitting children and children’s causes.

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism is the only organization in southeast Georgia that operates an accredited, year-round education program for students with autism and one of only a handful of such programs in the entire state. Through its programs, intakes and consultations, MRCA provides assistance to children and families dealing with ASD and other developmental disorders in the immediate Coastal Empire and throughout southeast Georgia.

The Matthews Children’s Foundation is affiliated with the Mathews International Corporation casket division and has delivered millions of dollars in grants throughout the country since its introduction in the early 1990s. Fox & Weeks is the only funeral home in the area actively participating in the Matthews Children’s Foundation program supporting non-profit organizations dedicated to children.

To qualify for a Matthews Children’s Foundation grant through Fox & Weeks, an application must be submitted and an organization’s activities must be primarily directed towards the welfare and benefit of children. Any organization in the Coastal Empire with the primary purpose of providing for children’s needs is eligible to apply for a Matthews Children’s Foundation grant.

Please call Fox & Weeks at 352-7200 for more information or visit www.foxandweeks.com and click on Helpful Information to learn more about the Matthews Children’s Foundation application process.

Moonlight Mingle Raised Over $3,000 for Alzheimer’s Association

Moonlight Mingle Raised Over $3,000 for Alzheimer’s Association
Public Event honored Carole Arpin at her Whitemarsh Island home.

(SAVANNAH, GA) In recognition of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, a “Marsh Harbor High Tide Moonlight Mingle” raised a grand total of $3,426 to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter.

Featuring music, dancing, food and drink, the event was held at the Whitemarsh Island home of Donald and Carole Arpin. The waterfront estate is located on Turner’s Creek in the Marsh Harbor community.

Festivities included an appearance by Tommy Arpin to honor his mother, Carole, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Arpin is a participant in the 2018 Dancing Stars of Coastal Georgia and offered a sneak peek of the dance he will perform at the annual Alzheimer’s fundraiser in May. Last year, Dancing Stars events generated more than $2.6 million across the state, including nearly $400,000 at the Savannah event.

Guests at Moonlight Mingle were encouraged to support the Alzheimer’s Association with a donation in honor of Carole Arpin. Music was provided by the Marshall Brothers Band featuring Stewart Marshall (Stewart & Winfield, Junkyard Angel) as one of the Low Country Rock five-piece band’s three vocalists and guitarists.

“My parents, who have been married for nearly 60 years, moved to Savannah in 1978 to expand the family’s moving and storage business, and both have been actively involved in the community ever since,” said Tommy Arpin. “Mother was on the Savannah Film Commission and helped bring the ‘Forrest Gump’ movie to Savannah. She played a big part in the St. Mary’s Home fundraisers as well as her children’s school fundraisers. She believes in giving back to the church and other worthy causes. That’s one reason we decided to do this fundraiser to honor her and help find a cure for this disease that is slowly taking her from us.”

More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and, every 66 seconds, someone is diagnosed with the disease. Two-thirds of them are women. It is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.

The fundraiser also showcased the Arpin home, which is listed for sale. The brick home with four bedrooms and three full and three half bathrooms is located on Turner’s Creek at 8 Marsh Harbor Drive. It features sweeping views of the marsh and river, along with a library, two fireplaces, a stately dining room, gourmet kitchen, split floor plan and exquisite custom woodwork.

“This house was built for entertaining,” said Tommy Arpin. “My parents hosted annual Christmas parties there for many years, and my brothers and I often entertained our friends in the game room or out on the dock. We made many good memories in this house, and hopefully, someone else will enjoy this house as much as we did.”

Savannah Christian Prep School Upgrades Technology to Offer One-On-One Campus

By | Local NewsWIRE

Savannah Christian Prep School Upgrades Technology to Offer One-On-One Campus

(SAVANNAH, GA) Speros, a Savannah-based technology services company, has installed new campus-wide WiFi capabilities at the Savannah Christian Preparatory School to provide greater technology opportunities for students and enable the school to move closer to its goal of offering a “one-to-one” campus for students.

The upgrade coincided with multiple building and infrastructure improvements at Savannah Christian’s main campus on Chatham Parkway in conjunction with the school’s decision to close satellite campuses and consolidate all grades in one location.

Over the years, the school had installed a mix of different types of WiFi access points across the campus, none of which were centrally managed and did not support adequate demand for teacher, student and guest access. The new system unites the wireless infrastructure and provides ample room for students to use school-provided devices in classrooms and labs and to bring their own devices.

Heather Radtke and the Speros team provided a solution that has helped re-position Savannah Christian as a more technologically focused school,” said Rick Tindol, the school’s director of technology. “We use technology to teach traditional classes as well as courses that focus on technology, such as our CAD curriculum. It also allows us to prepare students for jobs that don’t exist yet.”

All students, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, use a mix of iPads, PCs and Chromebooks, but middle and upper school students may also bring their own devices to access the new student network. Tindol said about 650 devices access the system daily. Those include personal devices used by teachers and students, teachers’ desktop computers and 200 Chromebooks and 100 iPads provided by the school.

“Our goal is to make Savannah Christian a one-to-one campus, meaning every student will have their own device,” Tindol said. “We’re not there yet, as some classrooms have desktops that students share, but this new system allows us to get there.”

The upgrade also allows Tindol and his team to better manage and oversee student internet access, as the new equipment offers separate networks for students, teachers and guests and provides a greater layer of security in protecting school records and student privacy.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Speros, having used their phone systems for at least 20 years,” Tindol said. “We’ve come to rely on them for technological support as well as to provide the solutions we seek in offering 21st-century learning skills to our students.”

Savannah Christian Preparatory School is an independent, non-denominational PK-12 college prep Christian school, founded in 1951 by the Rev. George and Mrs. Harold Deane Akins. Savannah Christian has nearly 1,300 students on campus, nearly 900 family households and more than 200 employees.

Junkluggers of the Coastal Empire Supports Marine Toys for Tots in Holiday Events

Marine Toys for Tots Presented $1,500 and Help During their Holiday Toy Drives

(SAVANNAH, GA) Junkluggers of the Coastal Empire has selected Marine Toys for Tots as their charity partner for the month of December. Savannah’s eco-friendly and caring alternative to traditional junk removal will assist in the collection of more than 75 cubic yards of toys this holiday season.

To kickstart their partnership with Marine Toys for Tots, Junkluggers presented a $1,500 check to the organization on Friday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. during their Black Friday event at Toys-R-Us, located at 7400 Abercorn St in Savannah, Ga.

Marine Toys for Tots is collecting toys for children in need to brighten their Christmas season. This year, the organization will participate in approximately 45 events in which local citizens can drop off toys. The collected gifts will, in turn, be distributed through local non-profits, including the Salvation Army, United Way and a few churches.

During November and December, Hess and his wife, Misty, who is also his business partner, will be asking customers to participate by donating toys at the time of service. Junkluggers will also help move toys from two major events, one at Sun City in Bluffton and the other at Silver Moss in Hilton Head, to local holding stations.

“I’m a veteran, myself,” said Trevor Hess, owner and president of the local franchise of Junkluggers. “When looking for ways to give back locally, this just seemed like a perfect match because they really need our services and we are really passionate about the mission of Marine Toys for Tots.”

Hess previously served in the U.S. Navy and is currently continuing service as a member of the Navy Reserves.

Junkluggers hauls away items people no longer want or need and strives to donate and recycle as much as possible with the goal of keeping items out of landfills. The local franchise recently celebrated its grand opening and wants to start the business by giving back.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children. This year, Marine Toys for Tots will collect toys until Dec. 14.

“This takes a village to make this possible,” said Staff Sgt. Cody Reavis, Savannah Toys for Tots Foundation coordinator. “We need everyone’s support, and Junkluggers is providing us with a service that’s not easy. We encourage everyone who is able to come to one of our events and just give one gift to make a child’s Christmas happier.”

Low Country Dermatology Holds Donation Drive for the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empire

(SAVANNAH, GA) For the fourth consecutive year, Low Country Dermatology will hold a holiday donation drive to collect needed supplies for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire and to help stock a “holiday store” for families who use the house.

Low Country Dermatology, 310 Eisenhower Drive, Suite 12A, will accept donations through Friday, December 15 at 12 p.m.

“The last thing a parent with a child in the hospital wants to do is leave his or her child, get into the crowds and go gift shopping,” said Dr. Corinne Howington, who owns Low Country Dermatology. “I know that our community can ease the burdens that these parents are facing right now by giving back to these individuals and spreading the joy of the season.”

Items donated to the holiday store will allow parents who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House to select presents for their children and other family members.

Bill Sorochak, executive director of Ronald McDonald House, offered several gift ideas, including:

• Infants/toddlers: Stuffed animals, musical instruments, bath toys, teething toys, board books and interactive toys (blocks, rattles)

• School-aged children: Nerf and Fisher-Price toys, Legos and board games, toy trucks, dolls and dress-up clothes, puzzles and arts and craft kits.

• Teenagers: Footballs, volleyballs, basketballs, journals, adult coloring books and colored pencils, books and video games.

• Adults: Robes and slippers, Bath and Body Works lotions and sprays, books and interactive journals, electric razors and gift cards for coffee, movies and meals.

Wishlist items to support the operations of the house include: quick meals (soups, Ramen noodles, mac and cheese); individually packaged snacks, boxes of cereal and drinks; high efficiency free and clear laundry detergent and dryer sheets; hand sanitizer and hand soap; bathroom, shower and toilet bowl cleaners; Swiffer Wet Jet fluid and pads; disposable bowls, plates utensils and gloves; 33-gallon trash bags; 60-watt CFL light bulbs; toothbrushes and toothpaste, dishwasher tablets, sponges and liquid dish soap; Febreze; gallon zip-lock bags; tissues; disinfectant wipes and gas/grocery gift cards.

“We strive to make our patients and families as comfortable and at home as possible all year, but particularly during this season,” said Sorochak. “Dr. Howington helps us to do just that, and we are so appreciative that she garners community support for the individuals in our care and their families.”

All gifts should be unwrapped, and all donated items should be new, unopened and unused. Items can be dropped off through Friday, December 15, during office hours at the Low Country Dermatology office.

The practice is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities is to create, find and support programs that enhance the health and well-being of children and families. The house operates on a waiting list most of the year. For more information, visit http://www.rmhccoastalempire.org/about-our-house.html

Southern Motors Acura Held Grand Opening for New Dealership on Chatham Parkway

(SAVANNAH, GA) Southern Motors Acura held the grand opening of their new dealership at 102 Park of Commerce Dr. on Chatham Parkway. As part of the celebration, one visitor, Jim Backer, went home with a free two-year lease on a new Southern Motors Acura ILX.

The new outlet, with a 32,000-square-foot showroom, offers new and used car sales and customer service while Southern Motors’ current location, which has been on Broughton Street for 88 years, will continue to provide service for downtown customers.

“We are thrilled with this expansive new building and footprint, which will allow us to grow and support our community,” said Ross Kaminsky, Southern Motors co-owner general manager. “And our customers can expect the same great service they are used to from one of the oldest family run dealerships in the area.”

The new showroom was designed by Lynch Associate Architects; JTVS Builders served as the general contractor.

Founded in 1929 by Julius Kaminsky, Southern Motors is a third-generation family owned and operated business.

The Kaminsky family believes in their city and feels it is important to show support through numerous charities and investments.

As part of that effort, a percentage of every car sold at Southern Motors benefits Hospice Savannah’s Camp Aloha. Weekend Camp Aloha is for children ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of a loved one within the previous 24 months. The annual camp provides structured activities and plays to help the children realize they are not alone in their grief.
