BERNARD WILLIAMS INSURANCE HOLDS SEMINAR ON HEALTHCARE REFORM

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

(SAVANNAH, GA) Nearly 50 area business owners learned the ins and outs of healthcare reform during an April 30 seminar sponsored by Bernard Williams Insurance and Financial Services, SunTrust Bank and Deemer Dana & Froehle.

The seminar, held at the Coastal Georgia Center, featured an introduction by Ralph O. “Rob” Bowden, IV, vice president in charge of the Benefits Division at Bernard Williams, and a keynote address by David Smith, the company’s benefits partner from North Carolina. Smith, a leading expert in benefits and the Affordable Care Act, has extensive experience in healthcare, working with government as a regulator and policy advisor and with industries including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in sales and marketing. Smith, who also has a legal background, has helped employers and insurance agents with compliance issues.

Smith offered business owners the following background information about healthcare reform and tips to help them prepare for the upcoming changes:

· The Affordable Care Act has been implemented and many of the major compliance items will begin in 2014.

· If a business does have more than 50 full-time equivalent employees, it must offer “affordable” coverage to employees who work 30 or more hours per week in order to avoid paying penalties in the form of excise tax. Businesses are not required to offer insurance to employees who work less than 30 hours per week.

· Most businesses with 50 or more employees that offer benefits today won’t have to do much to become compliant; however, most of these businesses don’t know how the changes will affect them.

· There is a lot of confusion over the definition of small employers. For calculation purposes, a small business is one with less than 50 full-time equivalent employees.

· The best way to be prepared is for a business to have its readiness for the Affordable Care Act reviewed. Bernard Williams Insurance and Financial Services can provide that service.

Those who were not able to attend the seminar still have time to prepare for the upcoming changes. Business owners are encouraged to contact Rob Bowden at 912-234-4476 to learn more.

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

(SAVANNAH, GA) Dr. Ben Spitalnick was presented the President’s Award at the 2013 Night of Champions by the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) on May 9. “Dr. Ben” as he is known locally, is managing partner of Pediatric Associates of Savannah and currently serves as Representative for the Savannah area to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The LDSS President’s Award recognizes the contributions made by dedicated individuals in our community who go above and beyond the ordinary, to positively affect the lives of differently-abled people in a significant way.

LDSS President Candy Bogardus met Spitalnick through working together in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Memorial University Medical Center over 16 years ago. When Bogardus’ daughter Lainey was born with Down Syndrome, she and her husband called upon Spitalnick asking for help finding a support group in the Savannah area.

“God puts people along your path in life that sometimes know you better than you know yourself,” said Bogardus. “Dr. Ben was one of those people. He said to us, ‘I have some families you should meet. I know you can get this thing done!’"

“His passion for our kids is contagious. He is quick to spread it to whomever he meets. Dr. Ben makes a difference in the world of differently-abled people every day by advocating for them, befriending them, loving them for who they are, and taking care of them," she added.

The businesses attending the 2013 Night of Champions were inspired by Spitalnick’s willingness to go the extra mile by taking an active role in the lives of these special people. His dedication is apparent as he seeks out knowledge on any matter concerning “his kids” and is a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Bogardus added, “What a comfort to know that your doctor is just as vested in your child’s success and health as you are.”

Spitalnick hails from North Atlanta and is a graduate of the University of Georgia, received his medical degree from MCG, and did his Pediatric Residency at Memorial Health University here in Savannah.
