(Savannah, GA) For the second consecutive year, the Savannah Country Day School Mock Trial team is the Regional Mock Trial champion. After defeating teams from H. V. Jenkins and Benedictine in the preliminary rounds, SCDS faced off with Savannah Arts Academy in the Regional finals on Saturday, February 23. The victory over Savannah Arts earned the Country Day team its second title in a row- its third since 2003. The Savannah Country Day team advances to the state competition at the Gwinnett County Justice Center in Lawrenceville on March 15 and 16.

In Mock Trial competition, students play the roles of attorneys and witnesses based on evidence and witness statements provided to participants. Professional attorneys or judges serve as the presiding judges and jurors. Teams are evaluated on their ability to make a logical, cohesive and persuasive presentation, rather than on the legal merits of the case.
The champion team is made up of seniors Evan Brower, Jordan Cranman, Rhett Reeves, Randy Capocasale, Jessie Garten, and Fay Gibson; juniors Katherine Morrow and Brian Twibell; and sophomores Alex Thomson, Ryan Sandler, Yolanda Borquaye, Victor Miltiades, Chris Formey, and Anthony Taylor.

In the regional competition SCDS students brought home a total of ten awards. Evan Brower earned three Best Attorney awards. Rhett Reeves took home two. Jessie Garten won two Top Witness awards, Fay Gibson received one, and Ryan Sandler brought home two.

The Savannah Country Day School Mock Trial team is coached by faculty Peter Foley and Ken Hincker. Hunter Maclean attorneys Colin McRae (SCDS Class of 1991), Dennis Keene (SCDS parent 2016 & 2018), and Rachel Young also lend their expertise to the team.

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah Country Day School senior Daniel Gallagher President’s Scholar

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments

www.savcds.org

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah Country Day School senior Daniel Gallagher has been named a President’s Scholar by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The President’s Scholarship is Georgia Tech’s premier merit-based award. It is offered to approximately 110 outstanding entering freshmen who have demonstrated superb leadership skills, are among the top few in their class in academic performance, and show promise of continuing such performance in college and beyond.

The amount of the scholarship depends on a student’s final ranking in the competition. The top five Georgia residents and the top five non-Georgia residents are awarded full rides. The remaining awards are split among the other three levels. Gallagher is one of those top-five Georgia residents and will be awarded a full scholarship to Georgia Tech.

Of Daniel, SCDS Director of College Counseling Mary Beth Fry asserts, “Daniel Gallagher is simply amazing. He has always been an extraordinary student—someone in love with learning—and always works for the sake of knowing rather than for a grade. Daniel adores a great challenge: the more complex the problem is in front of him, the more fun he has with it. When we learned that Daniel had been named a Georgia Tech President’s Scholar, we were confident that he would be an exciting candidate to the scholarship committee for the full award, and I wasn’t in the least surprised to learn that he had indeed been named one of the top-five scholarship winners in the state of Georgia. Daniel, humble as he is, is still a bit overwhelmed and stunned, but that’s just his way; for our part, everyone at Country Day is enormously proud of him.”

At Savannah Country Day, Daniel is an athlete, playing varsity tennis and running cross-country. Daniel is also a member of the SCDS math team and a volunteer with Horizons – a Savannah Country Day hosted academic enrichment program for low income students.

Savannah Country Day School is a pre-k through twelve independent school that seeks to prepare students of academic and personal promise to meet with confidence, imagination, and integrity the challenges of college and of life.
