Healthy Savannah & Savannah Bicycle Campaign Celebrate City’s passing of Complete Streets Ordinance

By | Local NewsWIRE | No Comments
(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah City Council unanimously passed a Complete Streets Ordinance at the Thursday, January 22 council meeting. The Complete Streets ordinance is intended to provide a safe, convenient or comfortable travel experience for all users, including people who walk, ride bicycles, use transit and drive cars.
Implementation of the ordinance will make Complete Streets practices a regular part of its day-to-day operations, including applying pertinent principles to appropriate transportation projects and programs.
“We look forward to working with City staff in using this ordinance to make Savannah’s streets safe, attractive and convenient for people of all ages and abilities,” said John Bennett, executive director of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign. “Implementation of the ordinance will make our city a better place to live, work and play.”
One of Healthy Savannah’s objectives is to create better conditions in Savannah for walking and biking to school. In association with the Savannah Bicycle Campaign, the organization’s top three goals include the passing of the Complete Streets ordinance and completion of the Truman Linear Park Trail. The third objective, which encourages walking and biking to school, focuses on public education and improvements to bike paths and sidewalks leading to and surrounding neighborhood schools.
The Director of Healthy Living with Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, Paula Kreissler said, “If our streets are complete, kids will be safe and healthy walking and bicycling to school. With fewer people using cars for short-distance trips, there will be less traffic, less air pollution, and more community health benefits of increased physical activity.”
As part of the grant Healthy Savannah has collected over 800 surveys from community members. Ninety-five percent of respondents believe that childhood obesity is an issue in the community and ninety-four percent think that a complete streets ordinance is important or extremely important for our community. The majority of survey participants believe that having walking and bike lanes accessible for children traveling to school is “extremely important”.
Joel Smoker, Chief Operating Officer of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia, said, “I believe streets should be safe for all users at all times.  For shorter distances, choosing to walk, bicycle, or use transit should be as easy and convenient as choosing to drive.”
The Healthy Savannah Initiative has been awarded $250,000 in grant funding, as a part of a three year program from the Healthcare Georgia Foundation to fight childhood obesity. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia serves as the fiscal agent for the grant.

SCORE’s “Top Ten Tips To Make Your Small Business Lawsuit-Proof” on February 25

(SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah SCORE announces the Top Ten Tips Lecture Series, entitled “Top 10 Tips to Make Your Small Business Lawsuit-Proof.” The presentation will be held in the SCORE conference room, 111 E. Liberty Street, Savannah, on Wednesday, February 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The expert speaker will be business attorney Charles Bowen, founder of The Bowen Law Group. The lecture is free and open to the public. Please RSVP with SCORE at 912-652-4335.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: What should business owners do to ensure their companies are legal and to protect themselves from personal litigation that could have devastating financial damages? Business attorney Charles Bowen will review ten important, yet simple and affordable, steps, including:

• Setting up the correct business structure
• Getting the proper insurance
• Writing simple, enforceable contracts
• Ensuring agreements are in writing
• Acquiring and filing proper permits and registrations

Bowen will also discuss the importance of including disclaimers in contracts, how to resolve business complaints quickly and directly, and the importance of not cutting any legal corners.

“It costs a lot less than most people imagine to set up a business properly and legally,” said Bowen. “And this is just as important for small business owners as it is for large firms. Spending a few hundred dollars up front for a lawyer to review a contract is much more affordable than a lawsuit that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars later on.”

Bowen is also offering a free downloadable ebook on The Bowen Law Group’s website that explains how form a corporation, LLC or LLP in Georgia. This, along with other practical information for business owners, is available at thebowenlawgroup.com on the “News” tab.

ABOUT CHARLES BOWEN:
Based out of Savannah, Charles Bowen is a business attorney who focuses on commercial, banking and manufacturing law and also offers comprehensive mediation services. Bowen attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia where he graduated summa cum laude with honors in both psychology and political science. Upon graduating from Georgetown University Law Center in 1995, Bowen moved to Savannah and established a corporate law practice. He has received the Martindale-Hubbell® AV® Preeminent™ rating, the highest rating based upon confidential surveys sent to other attorneys. Park Place Outreach Launches Redesigned Website

(SAVANNAH, GA) Park Place Outreach – Youth Emergency Shelter (PPO) announces the launch of their redesigned website, which features several upgrades including a new secure online donation interface. This will give visitors a more convenient way for people to help further fund PPO operations.

Refurbished webpages also provide users with information about the PPO board of directors, business and community partners, family and children services provided by the shelf, and volunteer opportunities.

Visitors can also learn about news updates, upcoming events and sponsorship opportunities. For example, beginning Monday, January 26, website visitors can begin bidding on auction items that will be featured at The Celebration of Love Concert. Tickets for the concert can also be purchased on the PPO website.

Also, visitors will be able to RSVP to the Pink House Cooking Classes. As part of its progressive program offering, PPO has partnered with the famous Olde Pink House restaurant in Savannah to offer monthly cooking classes to kids, conducted by one of Pink House’s expert chefs. On the second Saturday of each month, a chef from the Pink House will conduct a cooking class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
